Mantis Compact Ergonomic Inspection Microscope

Since its introduction, Vision Engineering's Mantis has become the accepted standard for ergonomics and high performance magnification.

Mantis offers users 3D imaging with unrivalled clarity and comfort – without microscope eyepieces. Businesses choose Mantis because they know their operators are more efficient, more accurate and more productive. So the operator benefits and so does the business.

“Wow!” The most common reaction when looking into a Mantis for the first time...

Mantis Compact brings users many benefits for a wide range of inspection, manipulation or rework tasks.

An ergonomic body position makes Mantis more comfortable, less fatiguing and, more importantly, much easier to use. Plus, since there are no microscope eyepieces, operators can sit back from Mantis, making viewing and co-ordination tasks an entirely natural experience.

Features and Benefits

  • Superb stereo imaging, without fatigue,
  • Advances in optical design allow your eyes and hands to work together resulting in increased throughput, accuracy and reduced scrap and rework.
  • 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x magnification options provide clear, sharp images with long working distances and large depth of field.

Ease of Use

Increased head and body freedom for the operator leads to greater productivity, increased throughput, improved quality control and less fatigue.

Mantis Compact offers effortless 3-dimensional viewing, with the apparent distance to the viewed object image identical to that of the real object, eliminating re-focussing of the operator's eye; thus reducing the likelihood of fatigue.

Price and Performance

The latest generation of Mantis incorporates the most modern advances in optical design with LED illumination and a small footprint, giving a superb price / performance ratio.

Stand Options

  • Universal arm for simplicity and flexibility.
  • Rigid bench stand for added stability with substage illumination options.
  • Articulated arm for applications requiring extended reach, without compromising stability.
  • Floor stand (with articulated arm) for inspection where subjects are immobile, or require a standing position.

The Mantis stereo inspection system is a popular solution for inspecting and manipulating samples under magnification.

Ultra Violet Illumination
Mantis Compact Ultra Violet Illumination

With Mantis Compact UV, the standard 20 white light LEDs of Mantis Compact are replaced with 20 UVA LEDs (2.4mW/cm², with wavelength peak at 375 ± 5 nanometers).

Superb 3D optics make Mantis Compact UV, ideal for a wide range of non-destructive testing, crack & fatigue detection, conformal coating inspection of PCB's, UV medical adhesives & general UV inspection tasks.

  • Superb stereo vision gives unsurpassed crack and coating visibility
  • Fast and accurate fault detection
  • Enhanced productivity and reduced scrap rates
Floating Stage
Mantis Compact floating stage

Provides smooth and sensitive control allowing for samples to be accurately inspected. For use with bench stand only.

  • Sensitive controls for steady manoeuvrability
Objective Lens
Mantis Compact 2x Objective lens
  • 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x quick-change objective lenses are available, to suite different application requirements.

  • Simply 'twist and lock' to change the objective lens.

  • Disposable lens protection caps are available to protect your objective lens from damage when soldering, or in similar aggressive environments.

How does Mantis work?

Mantis is a true stereo microscope, without eyepieces. Twin optical paths pass through the patented optics of Mantis, exiting the single viewing lens as separate (stereo) optical paths, just as they would with a conventional stereo microscope. There is no magic, no electronic manipulation, just a high contrast, high resolution microscope image, without the hassle of microscope eyepieces.

Is working distance dependent on magnification?

Yes. The working distance of fixed objective lenses decreases as you increase the magnification. Mantis uses fixed objective lenses.

Objective lens Working distance
2x 167mm
4x 96mm
6x 73mm
8x 58.5mm

Zoom stereo microscopes have a fixed working distance across the entire zoom range.

What is depth of focus (depth of field)?

Depth of focus is the depth of the subject being viewed that is in sharp focus.

We do not quote depth of focus for the Mantis objective lenses, as exact figures are dependent on many external influences, not least being the user’s eyes. In general, depth of focus is larger at low magnifications and reduces as you increase magnification.

What illumination options are there?

All Mantis Compact use an LED array for surface illumination, containing 20 bright white long-life LEDs. Replacement LED arrays are available.

LED substage illumination is included with the bench stand. UV surface illumination is also available.

What’s the price of Mantis Compact?

The cost of Mantis Compact depends on configuration requirements. You will need to choose a Mantis Compact optical head, a stand option (Universal stand is a popular choice), plus at least one objective lens.

LED surface illumination is included with the Mantis Compact head. A universal power supply (suitable for all plug configurations) is included in every stand option. A dust cover is also included. To find out prices, or to discuss your specific application, why not talk to one of our experts?

What objective lenses do I require?

Choice of objective lenses depends on individual application requirements, but also user preferences.

When viewing or inspecting objects, it is advantageous to see more of the sample (i.e. larger field of view), with more of the sample in focus (i.e. larger depth of focus). So typically, Mantis users might inspect at 4x, or 6x magnification. But depending on application, users may prefer 8x. For example, if your sample is relatively flat, then using an increased magnification might be preferred.

(When magnification increases, depth of focus decreases. Relatively flat samples therefore are more suitable for inspecting at higher magnifications (than samples with many tall features).

When manipulating samples, the same rules apply, so users might manipulate at 4x, or 6x magnification. Lower magnifications mean that the sample remains in focus, you can see more of the sample (so you can see visual references), plus you can even hold the sample by hand without the image appearing distorted.

Higher magnifications are typically preferred for detail work (e.g. electronics inspection, soldering, or rework).
