An opportunity has arisen within the Design and Development Department at the Freeman Building in Send, Surrey, for an experienced, technically competent, Mechanical Design Engineer. The vacancy has arisen with the decision to convert a contract design slot to a permanent design position, given the amount of work now being undertaken.
Vision Engineering’s Mechanical Design Engineers are individually responsible for projects through the full life cycle of a product, from initial conception to full production.
The role is hands on designing and requires the individual to be a creative and pro-active problem solver, who takes ownership throughout and uses his/her own initiative to resolve engineering issues.
The role involves full liaison with industrial designers, toolmakers and sub-contractors, on and off-site and with all levels of staff in the Company.
The Design team, currently comprises a Chief Engineer, four permanent designers, a Design Project Manager, Electronic Support Engineer, Optical Research Engineer, Draughtsman, plus designated Toolroom and CAD support.
Led by the Design Manager and Design & Development Director, the team has state of the art CAD & prototyping facilities including rapid prototyping machines.
Required knowledge, skills & experience:
Candidates must have experience in the design of precision mechanical products involving intricate mechanical assemblies and mechanisms incorporating plastic mouldings, die castings and machined components.
Suitable previous experience may include the design of consumer type products, such as mobile phones and similar telecoms equipment, printers, fax machines, copiers, general consumer white goods, or of industrial monitoring & analytical instrumentation. Generally these are products of a similar scale and intricacy to our own, using similar materials. Experience of tolerance studies, numerical design calculations and Bill Of Material costs is also required.
The ideal candidate must have a fundamental, sound understanding of mechanical engineering, rather than product design. For purposes of project supervision & efficient integration into our products, a strong candidate may also have experience of electronics, electrical assemblies, PCB layout and power requirements.
For similar reasons, familiarity with digital imaging technologies & optical design are desirable, but not essential.
A successful candidate will be expected to be able to capture design decisions and highlight associated technical risks and seek and share good working practices to continuously improve their skill set and the overall working of the department. Ideally they should be an active member of IMechE, or equivalent professional body.
Good experience of 3D CAD systems is essential, ideally with Pro Engineer/CREO or Solid Works. Knowledge of relevant analysis tools is also desirable.
Candidates will have a minimum degree level qualification in Mechanical, Electromechanical or Optical Engineering.
