Coordinate Measuring Machines
Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) measure the geometry of physical objects by sensing points on the surface of the object with a touch probe. They are commonly used in manufacturing processes to inspect a physical part or assembly against the design specification.
Bridge type CMM’s equipped with air bearings for frictionless movement are commonly used for inspection in quality control. Since air bearings are highly susceptible to contamination, these machines are not suitable for use in machine shop conditions. Therefore machines that are used in manufacturing environments are usually equipped with more robust mechanical bearings for increased resistance against contamination, without compromising on measuring accuracy. This also allows the CMM to be positioned exactly where it is needed, as they don’t have to be near an air supply.
